Along with medical science, pharmaceutical sciences have the
mission of preserving and protecting human life and health. Modern-day
pharmaceutical sciences must contribute to the publicÕs quality
of life through the practical application of the life sciences,
namely the development of new medicines, and through clinical
activities that support medical care.
Showa Pharmaceutical University was established in 1930 through
the efforts of educators, parents, students, and benefactors who
aimed for a new standard in pharmaceutical education to meet the
challenges of a new era. The University has subsequently produced
many highly qualified graduates and has successfully promoted
research excellence in a free, and democratic scholastic environment.
In 1990, the University marked its 60th anniversary by relocating
from Setagaya to its present campus in Machida, thereby providing
students with the finest educational and research facilities of
any pharmaceutical university in Japan.
The authority and responsibility of pharmacists are expanding,
as a result of amendments to Japaneses medical, pharmaceutical,
and pharmacist laws. Accordingly, the University is reforming
its curriculum to place greater emphasis on clinical pharmacy
education, and expanding its graduate school. Showa Pharmaceutical
University has but one goal to the development of students that
appreciate the sanctity of life and are flush with a pioneering
spirit, able to make a valuable contribution to medical treatment
and people's health.
